Repeat Offenders: 3 Celebs Who Just Can’t Seem to Stay Out of Trouble

Some celebrities just can’t seem to stay out of legal trouble. Why, when they arguably have it all—money, power, fame—would they risk it all? Is it because as celebrities they are now so controlled that they can’t make a move without a manager, an agent or a publicist saying it’s okay? Are these bad choices their way of acting out or rebelling? Or is it due to some addiction—drug, sex or otherwise? Or, is it because the power makes them feel invincible? Could be any one of these things or combination. Let’s look at the top 3 offenders and see in which category they fall.

Chris Brown

August 2016 and Chris Brown is back in the news. He was arrested in his home in Tarzana, CA, charged with assault with a deadly weapon (California Penal Code  245), and released on $250,000 bail.  Now, truthfully the story is a little fishy. The victim doesn’t have the cleanest hands or background and seemingly jumped at every television interview she could the day of the alleged crime. But, unfortunately for Brown, a search warrant for his home was issued and guns and drugs were uncovered in a duffle bag right outside. So, even if it turns out he did not hold a gun to the victim and threaten her, there is still the possibility he will be charged with other violations. At the time of this writing we do not know the types of drugs recovered or who owned the gun, but as a convicted felon resulting from his assault on Rihanna, Chris is not supposed to be in possession of a firearm.  Perhaps the weapons belonged to one of his houseguests, and maybe the drugs too.  That would be good for Chris who posted ranting, aggressive and at times rambling Instagram videos while he holed up in house hours after the alleged incident while waiting for LAPD to return with a search warrant. This one is going to be interesting to monitor! True to our title, Chris Brown has had many a run-in with the law in between his assault on Rihanna in February 2009, for which he plead guilty and this August 2016 situation. There’s, the 2012 fight with Drake’s crew, then the assault on Frank Ocean, a hit and run and then another assault arrest after he grew angry with fans who tried to take a picture with him. A May 2014 arrest for a probation violation. Then there were the allegations levied against him in January 2016 for an alleged assault in Vegas (those charges were dropped). He has also faced legal complaints from his neighbors who say Chris and his friends ride ATVs recklessly on the street and damage their lawns. This is simply too much for one 27 year old musician. One thing is for sure though, Chris Brown needs help and a support system that can truly be there for him.

Lindsay Lohan

Like Chris Brown, Lindsay Lohan was back in the news in August 2016 but not for committing a crime; rather she was the victim of alleged domestic violence at the hands of her fiancée, Egor Tarabasov. So far no charges have been filed. Lohan has been in the spotlight since she was a young actress but as she entered her teens she became better known for her legal missteps than her acting chops. In 2007, Lohan was arrested twice, both times for DUI.  As a result, she was sentenced to one day in jail, community service, drug treatment programs for her addiction to cocaine, and 3 years of probation. Two years later though in October 2009, after failing to complete all the mandated programs, a year was added on to her probation. In June 2010 she was arrested after she violated a court order mandating that she not consume alcohol while wearing an ankle bracelet; she was sentenced to 90 days in jail. Lucky Lindsay only had to stay for two weeks. In September 2010, she failed a drug test, spent another day in jail, and went back to rehab for three months.  For a short while after that,  Lindsay was seemingly doing okay. But, not for long. In February 2011 she was charged with that somewhat infamous burglary involving a necklace from a Venice jewelry store.  She was sentenced to 120 days in jail and community service but due to overcrowding she served her sentence under house arrest. All that luck and you’d think Lindsay would make better choices. But, Lindsay once again failed to complete her community service and was sent back to jail. Luck was still with her and after a few hours she was released again due to overcrowding. This is when you truly begin to wonder—is this luck or do celebrities get special treatment? Looking at Lindsay’s laundry list it’s hard to say they don’t. On a good note, Lindsay has remained pretty much crime-free for the last few years albeit not without drama as is pretty evident by the events of August 2016.

Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen, troubled, rich kid from Malibu, son of famed Hollywood actor, Martin Sheen has spent a large part of his adult life entangled with the law. Generally for involving the same two things: assaults and drugs. Back in 1996, he charged with  assaulting a former girlfriend. In 1998, he nearly overdosed on cocaine. Then, in 2006, during his divorce from Denise Richards, there were claims that he physically and verbally abused her, even threatened to kill her. And, in December 2009, he was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault of Denise Richards. He has months in and out of rehab and has also participated in domestic violence counseling.  Despite all of that, he was subsequently found naked and drunk in a New York hotel. In 2014, a Los Angeles dental technician sued him for assault and battery.  Though he didn’t deny his conduct and blamed in on gas the dentist’s office  administered, she ultimately dropped the case.  What is clear though is that Charlie Sheen has had drug and anger problem that prevent him from making the best choices and even a supportive family and a lot of rehab have not really helped this Hollywood bad boy stay clean and out of trouble. Now that he is in his 50s maybe age will slow him down, provide him with some clarity and help him walk the straight and narrow.

Alexander Pope said, “to err is human.” Yes, celebs are human but it is troubling that people in their position to be role models, to do the right thing take such risks with their lives as well as those of others. And whether the repeat behavior is due to the pressure of the spotlight, youth, vast wealth, or delusions of superiority, one thing is for sure, these repeat offenders need help. At Proof we urge them to get some—for everybody’s sake.

Game Over for Lindsay Lohan in Video Game Case

Lindsay Lohan is no stranger to the judicial system, but this time she was a plaintiff (not a criminal defendant) seeking compensation from Grand Theft Auto V’s  (GTA V) developer, Rockstar Games, and parent company, Take-Two Interactive Software, for featuring a game character, Lacey Jonas, allegedly modeled off of her. Karen Gravano, star of Mob Wives, filed a separate suit against the same defendants, claiming that another game character, Andrea Bottini, resembled her appearance, her voice and her life story.

The basis of both claims were similar: a violation of a New York right-of-publicity law which says that use of a person’s image or voice for advertising or trade purposes is unlawful without consent from the individual.  Both Lohan and Gravano argued there was no prior permission or consent to use what they claimed were their images and/or voice. As for Lohan’s claims, the lawsuit noted two specific images of a “red bikini girl” that are seen on the GTA V box cover and at the start of the game. Ms. Lohan’s legal team contended that the cartoon blonde woman is a rendition of Lohan whose bikini, accessories, hair, and peace sign all resemble her. The lawsuit states “The Plaintiff has been using the peace sign hand gesture for years before and after its use in the video game.” The second image at issue appears on the disc cover and displays a woman being frisked by a police officer. The character is wearing a fedora style hat, sunglasses, daisy dukes and a white tee shirt with words Love First on it. Lohan’s lawyers claimed that the defendant “capitalized on the use of [the Plaintiffs] clothes style” and that there appeared to be an LO on the character’s shirt  which is “subliminally suggesting ‘LO’ for Lohan”.  Not sure how else you can spell LOVE without an “L” and an “O” but Lindsay’s lawyers still made this claim with a straight face. They further argued that a GTA V player avatar, whose mission includes helping a celebrity actress escape the paparazzi, includes identical events to Lohan’s real life (like all the fun times she had at Chateau Marmont where she allegedly racked up more than $45,000 in unpaid bills).

In March,  a New York judge denied Defendants’ motion dismiss the case. They appealed that decision and, on September 1, 2016, an appellate panel of 5 judges, who combined the Lohan and Gravano matters as they addressed the same legal issues, dismissed the lawsuits, saying “…this video game does not fall under the statutory definitions of advertising or trade.” Basically this means that even if the depictions of the characters did resemble Lohan and Gravano the right of publicity law on which the claims were based was not applicable and did not provide legal protection. The judges found that the game lacked direct name references and exact facial features of Gravano and Lohan and that it had its own unique story, characters, dialogue, and environment.  All of that combined with the player’s ability to choose how to proceed in the game, render it a work of fiction and satire and therefore protected by the First Amendment. Who knew Lindsay Lohan would play a role in the development of constitutional law??

Well, looks like it’s Game Over for Lohan and Gravano—unless they appeal; and I don’t think that’s likely.

Manis, Minis and Mistakes: What Celebs Need to Know About Courtroom Attire

Whether it’s a drunk driving charge, shoplifting, a custody battle, or something else, celebs are in court all the time. Some get the right advice (and actually follow it!) and show up to court as if he/she were an eager college grad going on his/her first job interview; others not so much.  You probably know whom I am talking about. Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears are the sure-fire “winners” here.  Rather than face their legal troubles with grace and respect, these celebs have made some pretty poor choices and sadly made a bit of a mockery of our system.

To be fair, not all of Lindsay’s courtroom attire choices have been bad. She has actually looked pretty appropriate a few times.  Let’s face it though, she has had more opportunities than most to do the right thing. And, the bulk of her choices? Not good. If were her lawyer, I would have stashed an LBD in my briefcase, dragged her into the ladies room and made her change each and every time she showed up looking like she was ready for a night of LA clubbing rather than a day in court. The following are the choices that bother me the most. First, without a doubt, that white, skin-hugging Kimberly Ovitz mini dress. Nothing says responsible law-abiding adult like a hot party dress, right? Next, would have to be that “colorful” manicure with the obscene message on her middle finger. Was the F*** U meant for the judge, the system as a whole, or for someone else? Either way, completely inappropriate. If she had just kept her hands below counsel table, she would have been fine, It’s not as if she has to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or anything! And those oh so close looks. The gray pants suit. Classy until Lindsay decided not to button her blouse.  That nice beige blazer? Just fine but not when completed with short shorts and booties. Ugh. I’m getting annoyed just thinking about this because they are all such easy fixes and sometimes you just gotta follow the rules. You don’t have to like them, Lindsay, you just have to follow them, especially when there’s something in it for you.

Britney. Oh, Britney.  Gosh, there was just so much going on for her personally during the time she was seemingly in and out of court that I can almost excuse some of her choices. But only just almost. That black backless dress for one hearing and lacy, white frock for another? No.  I think Britney wants to do the right thing, show respect for the system, as evidenced by some of her better choices but she just doesn’t have the right people telling her what to do in ways that make her want to listen to them. Again, if her lawyers could have been one step ahead of her and brought her something respectable to wear, I  am sure  she would have worn it. Britney has really cleaned up her life up since those days of the shaved head and umbrella rage.  She’s a good girl so I don’t think we’ll be seeing her in court too often anymore, but if we do, I bet she’ll look just fine. Stay classy, Brit.

Celebrity Mug Shot

From Shailene Woodley to Justin Bieber: The Best of Celebrity Mug Shots

From bar bust ups to drunk driving to “unintentional” trespassing and more, celebrities are no strangers to arrests. And of course with an arrest comes the dreaded celebrity mug shot, which is sure to be plastered across the Internet even before the celeb has called his lawyer!

Celebrity mug shots might just be our favorite form of selfie– well, it’s not really as selfie but we sure do like looking at them (Must be because without make up, the right lighting, a professional photographer and some retouching most celebs look a lot more like we do than we thought!).

Check out some of the celebrity mug shots of Hollywood hottest stars, and even a few of those  forgotten about players who just happen to have a celebrity mug shot worth talking about!

Shailene Woodley

shailene-woodley-mugshot-2000

Reese Witherspoon isn’t the only “Big Little Lies” cast member to have her celebrity mug shot taken. “Divergent” star Shailene Woodley also had a run in with the law. And though we might be biased because we absolutely love Shailene Woodley, we have to say  that out of all the celebrity mug shots, Woodley’s is pretty much the most adorable!

So, how’d she get to be part of the celebrity mug shot walk of fame? On October 10, 2016, Woodley and 27 other people were arrested during a protest at Standing Rock, while attempting to block the Dakota Access pipeline. Live footage of the actress’ arrest was streamed to roughly 40,000 viewers via her Facebook page. Later, she was strip searched in jail. I know, it seems weird to strip search someone following this type of offense and though kinda gross one can likely conclude that it might be related to her celebrity status (imagine those bragging rights?!) but despite Woodley also being “just shocked” by the strip search, apparently is is common practice in that jurisdiction for low level crimes.  Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chair Dave Archambault II and others have also been strip-searched after being arrested for nonviolent civil disobedience against the pipeline.

After the arrest and resulting strip search, the environmental activist said: “Every time we allow another pipeline … we are endorsing the fossil fuel industry and only prolonging the time it is going to take to switch to renewable energy.”

We at PROOF aren’t fans of breaking the law but Woodley’s cause was a noble and good one.  We commend her for her bravery and standing up for what she believes in–no matter the consequences.  Keep fighting the good fight, Shailene!

Reese Witherspoon

reese

The “Big Little Lies” actress and her husband, Jim Toth, were arrested in Atlanta in 2013. Toth was pulled over for suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Atlanta. Apparently Reese didn’t like that so much. So much so that she got into an argument with the police officer, which led to her arrest.

This celebrity mug shot is pretty unusual because it’s a pretty unusual mug shot for anyone — Witherspoon is looking down! The whole point of mug shots are for identification purposes. We have to wonder if the Atlanta PD gave the superstar a pass on looking at the camera because of her A-list status.

Either way, shortly after her jail release, the actress issued a statement saying there was “no excuse” for her behavior.

“I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behavior.”

Nick Carter

rs_560x420-160114095039-560.nick-carter-mug-shot.11416

Backstreet Boy Nick Carter may not have wanted it that way (sorry, sometimes we just can’t help ourselves with these puns!!) when he was arrested in Florida on January 13, 2016. The boybander was booked by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on a misdemeanor battery charge following an incident outside Hog’s Breath Saloon in Key West.

The singer was released after pleading not guilty and posting $1,500 bail. He was ordered to stay away from the bar.

Unfortunately for Carter, an employee at the Hog’s Breath, Skylar Carden, 21, filed a civil lawsuit against Carter a few weeks later, in which he accused the singer and former “Dancing with the Stars” runner-up of battery.

In a statement accompanying the lawsuit, Carter’s lawyer, Mark DiCowden’s said, “Nick Carter has shown the world that he is nothing more than a backstreet thug.” And you thought our pun was bad? Nick Carter,a thug? And what’s a backstreet thug?? All we picture is a good looking boy band member singing romantic songs. That’s not so scary! But the lawsuit did contain some scary allegations including that the singer “violently attacked” Carden by “striking and choking” him.

Carter settled the matter out of court–the terms of the settlement are not public–and the case was dismissed with prejudice (remember this means Carden can’t bring the suit again for any reason).

Pawn Stars Austin “Chumlee” Russell

GettyImages-514547872_1464063775115_2473892_ver1.0

Austin “Chumlee” Russell, star of the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” was arrested in Las Vegas on March 10, 2016 and charged with drug possession and “prohibited person in possession of a firearm,” according to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.

Here’s the really crazy part of this story: officers were serving a warrant at the reality star’s house for a sexual assault case when they found Russell with at least one gun, as well as with methamphetamine and marijuana.

In May 2016, Russell pleaded guilty in Las Vegas court to attempted possession of a controlled substance. As a result of the deal, Russell did not have to go to jail for the misdemeanor charge, instead he was sentenced to three years’ probation. The felony count of ownership or possession of a firearm by a prohibited person was stayed. If Russell completes the terms of his probation, the gun charge will be dismissed. And, that sexual assault charge that started the whole thing? Police have confirmed that Russell has not been charged at the time for that.

Bill Cosby

bill-cosby-mugshoit

We know we talk about Bill Cosby a lot on PROOF but we can’t help it, there are just so many aspects of his wrongdoing that make for excellent legal lessons!  And so, Bill Cosby’s infamous celebrity mug shot, which was years in the making after dozens upon dozens of accusations. As PROOF readers know, there is only one criminal case going forward against the disgraced funny man. He has been free on $1 million bail, but faces up to 10 years in jail for each of the sexual assault counts he is facing.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s office in Pennsylvania, where he is set to stand trial, released this mugshot shortly after his arraignment. Those do not look like the same kindly eyes of Dr. Huxtable. Unbelievable downfall.

Shia Labeouf

shia_mug

Shia Labeouf has been arrested more than once but of course his most famous celebrity mug shot was after getting drunk at Broadway musical “Cabaret” in New York City. In this shot, Labeouf has a big smile on his face and looks like he’s been crying. It’s unnerving to say the least!

According to police, the “Transformers” star was smoking inside the Studio 54 theater and acting “loud and disruptive” during the first act of the musical. Law enforcement officials were notified. The “Transformers” actor was arrested during intermission, handcuffed, and escorted out of the theater.

He was then charged with two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of criminal trespassing before being released.

Shia has since been arrested again in connection with his HeWillNotDivide.US protest but was also quickly released. For more information on that, click here.

Dustin Diamond

diamond26f-5-web

We all loved super nerd Screech on Saved by the Bell, too bad that geeky kid turned out to be such a not-so-great adult. Dustin Diamond gave off some seriously dangerous vibes when he made his way into the celebrity mug shots wall of fame after he was arrested in Wisconsin for allegedly stabbing a man with a switchblade on Christmas Day 2014.

The former teen actor was charged with possession of a switchblade, reckless endangerment and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was later convicted of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors. He served nearly three months in jail.

Lindsay Lohan

We love this one of Lindsay Lohan’s celebrity mug shots because she’s just so over it. She’s like — been there, done that!

This is the redhead’s mugshot from March 19, 2013 when she turned herself into the Santa Monica police. She eventually pleaded no contest to reckless driving and providing false information to the police who were investigating an accident that happened the previous summer.

The troubled star was sentenced to 90 days in a lockdown rehab facility.  Want more information about Lohan and the criminal justice system, click here and here.

Justin Bieber

justin-bieber-mug-600

Oh, Justin! We love you but you make it so hard on us sometimes.  What do we at PROOF have to say about our favorite bad boy’s celebrity mug shot? Well, does is not look like Bieber is having the best day of his life? Does to us! In reality though he has just been arrested for a DUI and drag-racing in Miami in 2014. Must have been a really fun race!

On the serious side though, at a press conference, a spokesperson for Miami Beach Police said that the arresting officer “smelled odor of alcoholic beverage” on the singer. Bieber was also charged with driving with an expired license and resisting arrest without violence.

We at PROOF are crossing our fingers and hoping that there are no celebrity mug shots of Bieber–even if they do look as good as this one!

At PROOF we love celebrity news as much as you do.  So if you want more, celebrity news about A-Listers (and others!), we welcome you to explore the rest of the site.
